Chicxulub crater
The Chicxulub crater is a prehistoric impact crater buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Its center is located near the town of Chicxulub, after which the crater is named. The age of Chicxulub asteroid impact and the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary (K–Pg boundary) coincide precisely, leading to the conclusion that the cause of the crater was the same cause resulting in the demise of non-avian dinosaurs on Earth.
Xtul
Xtul, (pronounced "shtool"), is a small village in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. It is on the north Gulf of Mexico coast, located 24 km west of the city of Progreso inside of the Progreso municipality, about halfway along the road between Sisal and Progreso. The village, like a few others located on the gulf coast, was a location where salt was harvested from the tidal pools in the area; the salt trade in this area dates back to Pre-Columbian times.
Chicxulub, Yucatán
Chicxulub is a town, and surrounding municipality of the same name, in the Mexican state of Yucatán. At the census of 2005, the town had a population of 5,052 people. Chicxulub is most famous for being near the geographic center of the Chicxulub crater, an impact crater discovered by geologists on the Yucatán Peninsula and extending into the ocean.
Chicxulub impactor
The Chicxulub impactor, also known as the K/Pg impactor and (more speculatively) as the Chicxulub asteroid, was an asteroid or comet at least ten kilometres (six miles) in diameter which impacted a few miles from the present-day town of Chicxulub in Mexico, after which the impactor and its crater are named.
