Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California. The population was 38,572 at the 2010 census, up from 27,109 at the 2000 census. Calexico is about 122 miles east of San Diego and 62 miles west of Yuma, Arizona. The name “Calexico” is a portmanteau of California and Mexico, which, like that of its adjacent sister city of Mexicali, emphasizes its identity as a border city.

1940 El Centro earthquake
The 1940 El Centro earthquake (or 1940 Imperial Valley earthquake) occurred at 21:35 Pacific Standard Time on May 18 in the Imperial Valley in southeastern Southern California near the international border of the United States and Mexico. It had a magnitude of 6.9 and a maximum perceived intensity of X (Intense) on the Mercalli intensity scale. It was the first major earthquake to be recorded by a strong-motion seismograph located next to a fault rupture.

The 1892 Laguna Salada earthquake occurred at 23:20 Pacific Standard Time on February 23 . It had an estimated magnitude of 7.1–7.2 on the moment magnitude scale and a maximum perceived intensity of X (Intense) on the Mercalli intensity scale. There were no reported casualties. The quake takes its name from a large dry lake bed in Baja California, Mexico.
1979 Imperial Valley earthquake
The 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake occurred at 16:16 Pacific Standard Time on October 15 just south of the United States - Mexico border and impacted the Imperial Valley in southeastern Southern California and the Mexicali Valley in northern Baja California. With a relatively shallow hypocenter, it caused property damage estimated at $30 million, and badly affected the irrigation systems in the Imperial Valley, but was not responsible for any deaths.
Calexico East Port of Entry
The Calexico East Port of Entry is a border crossing point between the United States and Mexico. It connects the cities of Calexico, California and Mexicali, Baja California. The east crossing was built in 1996 in an effort to divert traffic from the busy Calexico West Port of Entry in downtown Calexico, California. Since that time, all truck traffic entering the United States from Mexicali is inspected at Calexico East.

The Calexico West Port of Entry (formerly known simply as the Calexico Port of Entry) is one of two ports of entry in the Imperial Valley area of California. It is located in the downtown area of the Calexico-Mexicali metropolitan area that is divided by an international boundary. This is easy access to Interstate 8 via California State Route 111.
