Beirut

1973 Israeli raid on Lebanon

The 1973 Israeli raid on Lebanon (known as Operation Spring of Youth, part of Operation Wrath of God) took place on the night of April 9 and early morning of April 10, 1973 when Israel Defense Forces special forces units attacked several Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) targets in Beirut and Sidon, Lebanon. The operation is generally considered to be part of the retaliation for the Munich massacre at the Summer Olympics in 1972.

Port of Beirut

Chyah

Chiyah (in Arabic الشياح pronounced Ach-Chayyah Syriac: ܫܝܚܐ) is situated in the west region of the Lebanese capital of Beirut. The meaning of its name is vague and many suppositions were found: one saying that it has a Syriac origin (Chyaha) meaning the budding, another one saying that it means the processing of metal (Shewah) another theory is the Arabic origin of the name meaning a kind of tree that is used for silk production (a flourishing industry in this village).

Maghen Abraham Synagogue

The Maghen Abraham Synagogue is one of the main synagogues in Lebanon. The oldest synagogue is the Sidon Synagogue which was built in 833 but is believed to rest on an older synagogue dating back to the destruction of the Second Temple in 66 AD. Located in the former Jewish district of Wadi Abu Jamil in Beirut, it was abandoned after Israeli shelling destroyed the synagogue during the Lebanese Civil War.

Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque

The Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque is a sunni mosque located in Martyrs' Square in downtown Beirut, Lebanon. It was built between 2002 and 2007 by the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was buried beside it. It was inaugurated by his son Saad Hariri on October 17, 2008. According to the architect, Azmi Fakhuri, the blue-domed mosque has an Ottoman inspiration, copying the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul.
