King William's College
King William's College (Colleish Ree Illiam in Manx) is an International Baccalaureate HMC independent school for ages 3 to 18, situated near Castletown on the Isle of Man. The College is located on two sites in Castletown; the senior school occupies a campus which has pride of place on the shore of Castletown Bay, while The Buchan School, the College's preparatory school, is located in the Westhill part of Castletown, some two miles from the main campus.
Rushen Abbey
Rushen Abbey was an abbey on the Isle of Man, located near Ballasalla. Originally home for monks of the Savignac order, it soon came under Cistercian control and remained so until its dissolution. The abbey is located two miles from Castle Rushen; the most important political entity on the island in medieval times. The abbey was founded in 1134, under King Olaf I's control. He granted the land to Savignac monks from Furness Abbey.
Manx Military and Aviation Museum
The Manx Aviation and Military Museum is a small but very successful museum on the Isle of Man. Close to Castletown in the south of the island, it lies next to Isle of Man Airport. The museum is dedicated to the preservation of the Isle of Man's aviation and military heritage. The museum is run by the Manx Aviation Preservation Society.
Battle of Ronaldsway
The Battle of Ronaldsway took place in 1275 at Ronaldsway in the southern part of the Isle of Man between a Scottish army and the Manx. The battle crushed the final attempt by the Manx to re-establish the Norse Sudreyar dynasty. As the battle resulted in the death of the last Norse King of Mann, Guðrøðr Magnússon, and the emigration to Norway of the remaining members of the Manx royal family it also led to the firm establishment of Scottish rule on the Isle of Man.
Malew
Malew is a parish in the Isle of Man. It is in the sheading of Rushen together with the neighbouring parishes of Rushen and Arbory. Malew parish covers an area from Langness Peninsula and Scarlett up to Foxdale, and includes the villages of Ballasalla, St Mark's and Derbyhaven. The area includes both Ronaldsway and Balthane Industrial estates and the Isle of Man Airport. Geographically it also includes Castletown, but that town is administered separately.
Ballasalla railway station
Ballasalla Railway Station is located in the village of Ballasalla in the south of the Isle of Man, close to the airport, and is served on a seasonal basis by the Isle of Man Railway. It forms part of the sole remaining section of the once extensive network that operated across the island and is the usual crossing point for trains, making it popular with photographers.
Ronaldsway railway station
Ronaldsway Halt is a request stop on the Isle of Man Railway between Castletown and Ballasalla at Ronaldsway, near the Isle of Man Airport. Passengers wishing to board the train here can signal the driver to stop the train; to alight from the train the guard must be notified in advance.
Isle of Man Railway level crossings and points of interest
One of the characteristics of the Isle of Man Railway are the numerous level crossings and farm crossings along the various routes; many smaller crossing places are marked only by gates the criss-cross farm land and provide access to individual private roads which connect the farms to the main roads. Being largely rural in nature the railway has many of these scattered along the existing South Line, and there were, as one might expect, many more on the closed sections of the railway.
