Baghdad Zoo

The Baghdad Zoo is a 200-acre zoo originally opened in 1971 and located in Baghdad, Iraq, in the al-Zawraa' Gardens area along with the Zawraa Amusement Park and Zawraa' Tower. Before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the zoo housed 650 animals. After being decimated during the 2003 Iraqi war, when only about 35 animals survived, the zoo was reopened in 2003 and now houses about 1070 animals.

Victory Arch

The Arc of Triumph also called the Swords of Qādisīyah، and Hands of Victory in some Western sources, are a pair of triumphal arches in central Baghdad, Iraq. Each arch consists of a pair of hands holding crossed swords. The two arches mark the two entrances to Great Celebrations square and the parade-ground constructed to commemorate the Iran-Iraq war, led by then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The arches were opened to the public on August 8, 1989.

Green Zone

Baghdad Tower

Baghdad Tower (previously called International Saddam Tower) is a 205 m TV tower in Baghdad, Iraq. The tower opened in 1994 and replaced a communications tower destroyed in the Gulf War. A revolving restaurant and observation deck are located on the top floor. After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the tower was occupied by American soldiers and was renamed.

Republican Palace

The Republican Palace is a palace in Baghdad, Iraq, constructed on the orders of King Faisal II. It was Saddam Hussein's preferred place to meet visiting heads of state. The United States spared the palace during its shock and awe raid during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, in the belief that it might hold valuable documents. The Green Zone developed around it.

Palestine Hotel

The Palestine Hotel, often referred to simply as The Palestine, is an 18-story hotel in Baghdad, Iraq located on Firdos Square, across from the Sheraton Ishtar. It has long been favored by journalists and media personnel. The hotel overlooks the Tigris on its eastern bank and is located several hundred metres south of the Baghdad Hotel. The hotel was built in 1982 by the Iraqi government and managed by the French hotelier Le Méridien as the Palestine Meridien Hotel.

Ishtar Sheraton Hotel

The Ishtar Sheraton Hotelis a hotel in Baghdad, Iraq located on Firdos Square. It is the tallest building in Baghdad, and the tallest structure in Iraq after the Baghdad Tower. Despite its name, the hotel has had nothing to do with the Sheraton Hotel chain for over twenty years. The chain severed their management contract with the Iraqi Government, which built the property, during the 1991 Gulf War and the name has been used without permission ever since.

Ibn Sina Hospital

Ibn Sina Hospital is a hospital in Baghdad, Iraq which was built by four Iraqi doctors – Modafar Al Shather, Kadim Shubar, Kasim Abdul Majeed and Clement Serkis – in the mid-1960s. It was purchased for a fraction of its true value by the Iraqi government for use by Saddam Hussein, his family and the Baath Party elite. Uday Hussein was hospitalized there after being wounded in a failed assassination attempt in the mid-1990s.

Karkh

Karkh or Al-Karkh is historically the name of the western half of Baghdad, Iraq, or alternatively, the western shore of the river Tigris as it ran through Baghdad. The eastern shore is known as Al-Rasafa. Its name is derived from the Syriac (ܟܪܟܐ) Karkha; citadel. Today, it is also a neighborhood between the international zone and the Tigris. Karkh is one of nine administrative districts in Baghdad.

3 February 2007 Baghdad market bombing

The 3 February 2007 Baghdad market bombing was the detonation of a large truck bomb in a busy market in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on 3 February 2007. The suicide attack killed at least 135 people and injured 339 others. The bomb, estimated to be about one ton in weight, brought down at least 10 buildings and coffee shops and obliterated market stalls in a largely Shi‘ite enclave less than a half mile from the Tigris River.

The Assassin's Gate is one of four primary points of entry to the Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq. The name originates from the unit (Alpha Company, 2-6 Infantry, 2 Brigade, 1 Armored Division - Alpha Assassins) initially providing security at the gate and does not refer to an event nor does it have any Iraqi meaning. It is described as "a sandstone arch".

The Monument to the Unknown Soldier

The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is said to be inspired by the glorification of a martyr from the Iran–Iraq War, built in 1980 in central Baghdad when the war began. In 1986 the national square of Iraq, Great Celebrations square, was built near the monument, and in 1989 the Victory Arches were added to celebrate the victory of the war on Iran. The Monument represents a traditional shield (dira¹a) dropping from the dying grasp of an Iraqi warrior.

Blackwater Baghdad shootings

On September 16, 2007, seventeen Iraqi civilian fatalities and twenty injuries occurred in the Blackwater Baghdad shootings in Nisour Square, Baghdad. The fatalities occurred while a Blackwater Personal Security Detail was clearing the way for a convoy of US State Department vehicles transporting diplomats to a meeting in western Baghdad with officials of the United States Agency for International Development. The killings outraged Iraqis and strained relations between Iraq and Washington.

Package Q Strike

The Package Q Airstrike was the largest air strike of the Gulf War, and the largest strike of F-16s in military history. Many aircraft including the F-117 were used to attack targets in Baghdad, which was the most heavily defended area of Iraq. The same target was hit several times by F-117, and the last package consisted of 17 F-111F on the 19th day of the war. The main target of the strike was the Osirak Nuclear Reactor in Baghdad, along with many other military sites across the city.

The 10 May 2010 Iraq attacks were a series of bomb and shooting attacks that occurred in Iraq on 10 May 2010, killing over 114 people and injuring 350, the highest death toll for a single day in Iraq in 2010. It was also the deadliest day in the country until the attacks on 23 July 2012, which killed 116 people.
