Hellenic Navy

Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall

The Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall is an indoor arena in Nikaia, near Piraeus. It hosted the weightlifting events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Korydallos Prison

Korydallos Prison Complex is the main prison of Greece, housing both maximum-security men and women. It is located in Korydallos, Piraeus. Its most famous detainees are the November 17 terrorist members. Korydallos prison was also used as the place for the Greek junta trials in 1975. In November 1995, there was a massive riot, with inmates taking control of the prison for several days in a "battle" with prison guards and police. Nikolaos Dertilis was the last remaining junta member in jail.

Piraeus Prefecture

Piraeus Prefecture (Greek: Νομός Πειραιά or Νομός Πειραιώς) was one of the prefectures of Greece. It was part of the Attica region and the Athens-Piraeus super-prefecture. The capital of the prefecture was the city of Piraeus. Battle of Munichia

The Battle of Munichia was fought between Athenians exiled by the oligarchic government of the Thirty Tyrants and the forces of that government, supported by a Spartan garrison. In the battle, a substantially superior force composed of the Spartan garrison of Athens and the army of the oligarchic government attacked a hill in Piraeus which had been seized by 1,000 exiles under Thrasybulus, but was defeated. After this defeat, the Thirty Tyrants were forced to flee to Eleusis.

Munichia

Munichia is the ancient Greek name for a steep hill (86 m. high) in Piraeus, Athens, Greece known today as Kastella. This is a fashionable neighborhood in central Piraeus. On the top of the hill is a Greek Orthodox church named after the Prophet Elijah. The narrow streets around the church are surrounded by picturesque houses. The Veakio Theater, known for its summer performances is located here. In 403 BCE, Athenian democrats defeated forces of the thirty tyrants at the Battle of Munychia.

German submarine U-596 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for the Nazi German Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 4 January 1941 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg as 'werk' 572, launched on 17 September 1941 and commissioned on 13 November under Kapitänleutnant Gunther Jahn. He was replaced on 28 July 1943 by Oberleutnant Victor-Whilhelm Noon who was superseded by Oblt. Hans Kolbus in July 1944.

Psyttaleia

Psyttaleia is an uninhabited island in the Saronic Gulf a few miles off the coast of Piraeus, Greece. It covers an area of 0.375 square kilometers. SS Reina del Mar

Reina del Mar was a 13,824 GRT cruise ship which was built by Vickers-Armstrongs in 1950. She served with Furness Withy for fifteen years, then with a Bulgarian company for three years, renamed Varna. She spent much of the 1970s laid up, and was renamed Venus and then Riviera. In the early 1980s, she was renamed Reina del Mar and refitted for further use as a cruise ship but a fire gutted her, and she was scuttled on 1 June 1981 when a further fire broke out.
