Spandau Prison

Spree

The Spree is a river that flows through the Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin states of Germany, and in the Ústí nad Labem region of the Czech Republic. It is a left bank tributary of the River Havel and is approximately 400 kilometres in length. The reach of the river between the Dämeritzsee and Müggelsee to the east of Berlin is known as the Müggelspree.

Spandau Citadel

The Spandau Citadel is a fortress in Berlin, Germany, one of the best-preserved Renaissance military structures of Europe. Built from 1559–94 atop a medieval fort on an island created by the meeting of the Havel and the Spree, it was designed to protect the town of Spandau, which is now part of Berlin. In recent years it has been used as a museum and has become a popular tourist spot.

Rathaus Spandau (Berlin U-Bahn)

Rathaus Spandau is one of the terminals of the Berlin U-Bahn line U7 (the other one being Rudow). It was opened on 1 October 1984 with the line's extension from Rohrdamm to Rathaus Spandau. The station takes its name from the nearby Rathaus Spandau, the historic city hall of Spandau. Close to the U-Bahn station Rathaus Spandau is the Berlin-Spandau railway station of the Berlin S-Bahn line S75 and the Deutsche Bahn for regional and intercity transport.

It takes its name from the Altstadt Spandau, the historic central area of the former independent city of Spandau. The station was opened on 1 October 1984 (architect R.G. Rümmler) with the line's extension from Rohrdamm to Rathaus Spandau. It lies between Rathaus Spandau and Zitadelle stations. The next station is Zitadelle.

Zitadelle (Berlin U-Bahn)

Zitadelle is a station on the Berlin U-Bahn line U7. It was opened on 1 October 1984 with the line's extension from Rohrdamm to Rathaus Spandau. Its name means "Citadel" in English and it was named for the historic Spandau Citadel. Unlike most u-bahn stations, Zitadelle has side platforms. The station's interiors were also designed to resemble the citadel's style. It lies between the stations Altstadt Spandau and Haselhorst. It was built/opened by R.G.

Haselhorst (Berlin U-Bahn)

Haselhorst is a station on the Berlin U-Bahn line U7. It was opened on 1 October 1984 with the line's extension from Rohrdamm to Rathaus Spandau. Its name means "hazel eyrie" in English; it was named for the locality where it lies: Haselhorst in the borough of Spandau. It lies between the stations Zitadelle and Paulsternstraße. It was build by R.G. Rümmler, mentionable are interesting light effects on the ceiling. The next station is Paulsternstraße.

Olympic Stadium (Berlin)

The Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium in Berlin, Germany. There have been two stadia on the site: the present facility, and one that is called the Deutsches Stadion which was built for the aborted 1916 Summer Olympics. Both were designed by members of the same family, the first by Otto March and the second by his son Werner March. It is the second biggest stadium in Germany behind Signal Iduna Park.

Bell Tower of Berlin Olympic Stadium

The Bell Tower of Berlin Olympic Stadium was a 77 metres high observation tower that was built in 1934 after plans by professor Werner March. The steel skeleton construction was covered with limestone plates. After the Second World War the Soviet troops accidentally set the tower's contents on fire and it was no longer stable. Therefore the British engineers blew it up in 1947.

Ruhleben (Berlin U-Bahn)

Ruhleben is a Berlin U-Bahn station in the Westend district. It is the western terminus of the U2 line. The elevated station designed by Alfred Grenander opened on 22 December 1929. Plans to extend the U2 toward Spandau were never carried out and became obsolete after the construction of the U7 in 1984 and the re-opening of the Spandau Suburban Line of the Berlin S-Bahn in 1998.

Altstadt Spandau

Altstadt Spandau is the historic centre (the old city) of the borough (Bezirk) of Spandau in the western suburbs of Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It is one of the four zones of the locality (Ortsteil) of Spandau. The Altstadt is situated on the west bank of the River Havel by its confluence with the River Spree. It was protected from attack by the Spandau Citadel, on an island between the two rivers.

It was designed by Heinrich Reinhardt and Georg Süßenguth, and was built between 1910 and 1913. Wilhelmstraße (Spandau)

The Wilhelmstraße in the Berliner district of Spandau is the connecting street between Spandau and Potsdam. In the north, at Seeburger Straße and the Ziegelhof, the Wilhelmstraße runs into the Klosterstraße, about a kilometre south of Spandau Station. It crosses the Heerstraße and from there on it is also the Bundesstraße 2. At its southern end, at the „Seeburger Zipfel“ at Karolinenhöhe the Wilhelmstraße runs into the Potsdamer Chaussee.

The Heerstraße runs from Theodor-Heuss-Platz in Berlin-Charlottenburg until the western city border of Berlin in the locality of Staaken in the borough of Spandau. Britannia Centre Spandau

The former Britannia Centre Spandau, before known as British Forces Families Centre (BFFC), was built in 1990 by PSA for the British Authorities on the site where Spandau Prison used to be located. It centralised the main shopping, welfare, employment and broadcasting facilities for the British military community in Berlin. The Britannia Centre consisted of a new shopping and cinema complex and five existing and completely refurbished two and three-storey buildings.

Hakenfelde Prison

Hakenfelde Prison (German: Justizvollzugsanstalt Hakenfelde, JVA Hakenfelde) is a low-security prison in Hakenfelde in Berlin, operated by the State of Berlin Department of Corrections. It was opened on 1 March 1978 in then West Berlin, and was originally a branch of Düppel Prison. It became an independent correctional institution in 1991. Between 1995 and 1998, its old barracks were replaced by a modern prison building. It has a capacity of 908 prisoners.

2013 Berlin helicopter crash

On 21 March 2013 around 10:30 CET, two helicopters of the German Federal Police collided in front of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Amid a large-scale training exercise, one helicopter apparently had landed on top of the other in snowy weather. The accident left one pilot dead and injured several other persons.
