East Berlin

East Berlin existed between 1949 and 1990. It comprised the eastern regions of Berlin and consisted of the Soviet sector of Berlin that was established in 1945. The American, British and French sectors became West Berlin, a part strongly associated with West Germany. East Berlin was claimed as the capital of East Germany. From 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989, East Berlin was separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall.

Rotes Rathaus

Fernsehturm Berlin

The Fernsehturm (English: television tower) is a television tower in the city centre of Berlin, Germany. Close to Alexanderplatz, the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the administration of the German Democratic Republic. It was intended as a symbol of Berlin, which it remains today, as it is easily visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin. With its height of 368 meters, it is the tallest structure in Germany.

Neptunbrunnen

The Neptune Fountain in Berlin was built in 1891 and was designed by Reinhold Begas. The Roman god Neptune is in the center. The four women around him represent the four main rivers of Prussia: Elbe, Rhine, Vistula, and Oder. The fountain was removed from its original location at the Schlossplatz in 1951, when the former Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace) there was demolished.

Rosenstrasse protest

The Rosenstrasse protest was a nonviolent protest in Rosenstraße ("Rose street") in Berlin in February and March 1943, carried out by the non-Jewish wives and relatives of Jewish men who had been arrested for deportation. The protests escalated until the men were released. It was a significant instance of opposition to the events of the Holocaust.

Jüdenstraße (Berlin-Mitte)

Palasthotel

Palasthotel was a hotel belonging to the Interhotel-chain and situated in the Mitte-district of Berlin, at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 5, right behind the Berliner Dom and close to the river Spree. It was built on a design by Ferenc Kiss between 1976 and 1979. The hotel had 600 rooms with 1,000 beds and a conference hall with about 2,000 seats. It was closed for all East German guests, as one had to pay in a hard currency instead of the local East German mark.

Großgaststätte Ahornblatt

The Großgaststätte Ahornblatt (lit. "Great Maple Leaf Restaurant") was a building located in the Mitte district of Berlin. Built between 1971 and 1973 as part of the new Fischerinsel residential condominium project, it accommodated a self service restaurant with 880 seats and a shopping arcade for the employees of the East German Ministry of Construction and for the workers of other nearby offices. Despite protests, the building was demolished in 2000.

Neuer Marstall

The Neuer Marstall (English: New Stables) is a listed historic building in Berlin, Germany located on the Schloßplatz and the Spree River. Completed in 1901 and facing the former Royal Palace, the neo-Baroque "New Stables" once sheltered the Royal equerry, horses and carriages of Imperial Germany. The complex also included three enclosed courtyards, a riding school, and the Knights College.

Mühlendamm

Mühlendamm refers to the Mühlendammbrücke (Mill Dam Bridge) in East Berlin's Mitte district and the road crossing the Spree river between Gertaudenstraße and Molkenmarkt. Originally a dam was built at this location used for both crossing the river and for water mills. Later, after the installation of defenses, a lock enabled frequent changes in the crossing of the Spree. The current concrete bridge was built in 1968 and is part of the east–west road link to Berlin's city center.

Molkenmarkt is the oldest square in Berlin. It is approximately 9,200 square metres in size. It is located in the old centre of the city and was the city marketplace until the development of a new market at St. Mary's church in the late 13th century, after which it was known as the Olde Markt or Alter Markt (Old Market) until 1685, when it was renamed to Mulkenmarkt, later to change to Molkenmarkt. The area around the square was originally densely populated.

Zum Nußbaum

Zum Nußbaum is a popular historic inn in Berlin, Germany. It was formerly located in Fischerinsel, and was one of the oldest drinking establishments in the city; after its destruction in World War II it was recreated in the nearby Nikolaiviertel. The inn, originally located at Fischerstraße 21, was built either in 1505 or in 1705, according to different interpretations of the inscription over the cellar entrance. It was named for the nut tree which formerly stood outside it.
