The 1959 African Cup of Nations was the second edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the football championship of Africa. It was hosted and won by the United Arab Republic, a short-lived confederation between Egypt and Syria. Only three teams participated: host team United Arab Republic, Sudan and Ethiopia. TWA Flight 903 was a regularly scheduled flight from Bombay (Mumbai), India to New York-Idlewild, via Cairo and Rome-Ciampino. The Star of Maryland, a Lockheed Constellation L-749A, flew the route on the night of August 31, 1950. It departed Cairo at 23:35 for Rome-Ciampino with 55 persons aboard (48 passengers and seven crew members) in good weather.

Ramses Station

Ramses Railway Station is the main railway station of Cairo, Egypt. The name is derived from the Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II whose statue was erected by Nasser on the square in 1955. The station was formerly known as Misr Station. The original railway station was built as the terminal of the first rail link from Alexandria to Cairo in 1856. The current building was erected in 1892 and upgraded in 1955. As of January 2001 it was undergoing a major modernisation.

Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue (Cairo)

The Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue (lit. Gate of Heaven) is located in Cairo, Egypt. The synagogue was also known as Temple Ismailia and the Adly Street Synagogue. Its long-time leader was Chief Rabbi Chaim Nahum. In 2008, the synagogue marked its 100th anniversary. The synagogue was built in a style evoking ancient Egyptian temples, and was once the largest building on the boulevard. When the synagogue opened in 1899, there was a vibrant Jewish community in Cairo.

6th October Bridge

The 6th October Bridge is an elevated highway in central Cairo, Egypt. The 20.5 kilometres bridge and causeway crosses the Nile River twice from the west bank suburbs, east through Gezira Island to Downtown Cairo, and on to connect the city to the Cairo International Airport to the east. Its name commemorates the date of 'The Crossing' which commenced the outbreak day of the October War in 1973.

Agouza

Agouza is a small district of Giza, on the western bank of the Nile River in Cairo. It is situated between 6th October Bridge and 15th May Bridge and is north of Dokki and south of Mohandesin districts. Although it is very near to Mohandesin, it is much less affluent.
