Kinshasa

Kinshasa is the capital and the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is located on the Congo River. Once a site of fishing villages, Kinshasa is now an urban area with a population of 9 million inhabitants. It faces the capital of the neighbouring Republic of Congo, Brazzaville, which can be seen in the distance across the wide Congo River. The city of Kinshasa is also one of the DRC's 11 provinces.

Maya-Maya Airport

Stade Tata Raphaël (Father Raphael Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Originally known as Stade Roi Baudouin (King Baudouin Stadium) when it was inaugurated in 1952 and Stade du 20 Mai (20th of May Stadium) in 1967, it was used mostly for football matches. Académie des Beaux-Arts (Kinshasa)

The Académie des Beaux-Arts (ABA) is a school in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The school is devoted to teaching the arts, and was founded in 1943 as the École Saint-Luc à Gombe Matadi by Belgian catholic missionary Marc Wallenda. In 1949 the school moved to present-day Kinshasa and in 1957 it was renamed as the Académie des Beaux-Arts. During the education reforms of 1981 the school was integrated into the national technical university system.

N'Dolo Airport

N'Dolo Airport, also known as Ndolo Airport, is a secondary airport in the city of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the commune of Barumbu near the city center. The Aviation militaire de la Force Publique was established here in October 1940 with requisitioned aircraft. Runways are limited to aircraft under 15,000 kg since the disastrous crash of January 8, 1996, in which an Antonov An-32 aborted takeoff and overran the runway 600 m into a market.

The 1996 Air Africa crash occurred on 8 January 1996 when an overloaded Air Africa Antonov An-32B aircraft, wet leased from Moscow Airways and bound for Kahemba Airport, overshot the runway at N'Dolo Airport in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo after failing to take off. The aircraft ploughed into Kinshasa's Simbazikita street market, causing an estimated 300 fatalities (including two on board the aircraft) and 253 serious injuries.

Lola ya Bonobo

Founded by Claudine Andre in 1994, Lola ya Bonobo is the world's only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos. Since 2002, the sanctuary has been located at the Petites Chutes de la Lukaya, just outside of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lola ya Bonobo means 'paradise for bonobos' in Lingala, the main language of Kinshasa. In 2012, Lola ya Bonobo was home to 60 bonobos who live in 30 hectares of primary forest. Typically, bonobos arrive as young infants.

Nabemba Tower

The Nabemba Tower, also known as Elf Tower, is an office skyscraper in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. At 106 metres and 30 floors it is the tallest building in the Republic of the Congo. It is named after Mont Nabemba, the highest mountain in the country. The tower was built with borrowed funds from the French oil company Elf Aquitaine. The tower was designed by Jean Marie Legrand during the government's five-year plan and was built between 1983 and 1986.

Lukaya River

The Lukaya is a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its source is located in the Crystal Mountains (Montagnes de Cristal), from which it runs eastward through Bas-Congo, then runs into the banks of the Ndjili River. The rail line from Matadi to Kinshasa runs along the river valley for a time, passing to the south and then to the east of Kinshasa. At one point the river was the namesake of a district in the Congo Free State.

On 4 April 2011, a Georgian Airways Bombardier CRJ-100ER crashed while landing at N'djili Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The aircraft broke up when it hit the runway at the airport as it attempted to land. There were 32 fatalities, with the sole survivor a Congolese journalist.

Brazzaville arms dump blasts

On 4 March 2012, a series of blasts occurred at an army arms dump in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. At least 250 people were killed by the explosions. Additional bodies were said to be "unfindable. " Among the dead were six Chinese workers from a Beijing Construction Engineering Group work site close to the armoury. Interior Minister Raymond Mboulou said that nearby hospitals were overflowing with injuries, with many wounded lying in hallways due to lack of space.
