Dolní Věstonice
For information on the Dolní Věstonice archaeological site, please see Dolní Věstonice (archaeology). Dolní Věstonice is a small village in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It is known for a series of ice age archaeological sites in the area. These sites were used by mammoth hunters, and finds include a triple burial and the Venus of Dolní Věstonice. A small fortress was built here during the Great Moravia period. The place is mentioned in written documents from 1312.
Šakvice train disaster
The Šakvice train disaster occurred on 24 December 1953 in Czechoslovakia. A local train was standing at the Šakvice station near Brno, when the Prague-Bratislava express ran into it, resulting in 103 deaths and a further 83 injured. The Ministry of the Interior said there was gross negligence by a number of railway men who had since been arrested. Other reports said that the express train crew had consumed a number of bottles of wine. Other sources have over 100 or 186 deaths.
