Dolní Věstonice

For information on the Dolní Věstonice archaeological site, please see Dolní Věstonice (archaeology). Dolní Věstonice is a small village in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It is known for a series of ice age archaeological sites in the area. These sites were used by mammoth hunters, and finds include a triple burial and the Venus of Dolní Věstonice. The Lednice-Valtice Area is registered in the list of monuments protected as World Heritage by UNESCO next to another site - Pálava Landscape Protected Area, registered by UNESCO only a few years prior to the nearby Pálava Biosphere Reserve.

Myjava (river)

The Myjava River is a river in western Slovakia and for a small part in the Czech Republic and left tributary of the Morava River. Mikulov Castle

Mikulov Castle is situated in the town of Mikulov in South Moravia, Czech Republic. The castle stands on a place of historic Slavonic settlement, where since the end of the 13th century the original stone castle was erected. The present castle is the result of a reconstruction in 1719-1730 under the dukes of Dietrichstein. The end of World War II meant a complete disaster for the castle, as German troops withdrawing from the town set fire to it.

Šakvice train disaster

The Šakvice train disaster occurred on 24 December 1953 in Czechoslovakia. A local train was standing at the Šakvice station near Brno, when the Prague-Bratislava express ran into it, resulting in 103 deaths and a further 83 injured. The Ministry of the Interior said there was gross negligence by a number of railway men who had since been arrested. Other reports said that the express train crew had consumed a number of bottles of wine. Other sources have over 100 or 186 deaths.

Břeclav railway station (Czech: Železniční stanice Břeclav) is an important international railway junction in the Czech Republic, located in the town of Břeclav in South Moravia, close to the borders with Austria and Slovakia. The station opened in 1837 as Lundenburger Bahnhof (Lundenburg is the German exonym for Břeclav) on the North railway, the first locomotive-hauled railway in Austria-Hungary.
