Salamis, Cyprus

Salamis is an ancient Greek city-state on the east coast of Cyprus, at the mouth of the river Pedieos, 6 km north of modern Famagusta. According to tradition the founder of Salamis was Teucer, son of Telamon, who could not return home after the Trojan war because he had failed to avenge his brother Ajax.

Eastern Mediterranean University

The Eastern Mediterranean University (Turkish: Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi), located in Northern Cyprus, was established in 1979 as a higher-education institution of technology for Turkish Cypriots. In 1986, it was converted to a state university. The campus is located 10 km from the city of Famagusta. The university has 139 programs (11 Faculties and 5 Schools) offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as a research infrastructure. The medium of instruction is entirely in English.

Pedieos

The Pedieos (ancient Pediaios or Pediaeus or Pidkias) is the longest river in Cyprus. The river originates in the Troodos Mountains close to Machairas Monastery and flows northeast across the Mesaoria plains, through the capital city Nicosia. It then steers east, meeting the sea at Famagusta Bay close to the ancient Greek city of Salamis. The river has a total length of approximately 100 km. An 18 km stretch of the river banks, in and around Nicosia, has been turned into pedestrian walkways.

Famagusta Bay

Famagusta Bay is the easternmost body of water that is formed by the Karpasia peninsula and Protaras. It is named after the city of Famagusta, which lies almost right in the middle of the bay. The ancient city-state of Salamis also is found on the bay, north of Famagusta. It is known for the best sandy beaches in Cyprus, which stretch for miles.

Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque

The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque originally known as Saint Nicholas's Cathedral and later as the Ayasofya (Saint Sophia) Mosque of Magusa, is the largest medieval building in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. Built between 1298 and c. 1400, it was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and it remains a mosque to this day.

On September 2, 1958 the Battle of Liopetri was fought here between the British and four EOKA fighters, Fotis Pittas, Andreas Karios, Elias Papakyriakou and Christos Samaras, who were from Liopetri. In 2001 the number of inhabitants was 3,837.

Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda massacre

Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda massacre (Turkish: Muratağa, Sandallar ve Atlılar katliamı), refers to the massacre of Turkish Cypriots by EOKA B on 14 August 1974 in the villages of Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda. 89 (or 84) people from Maratha and Santalaris were killed, and a further 37 people were killed in the village of Aloda. In total, 126 people were killed during the massacre.
