Amazon rainforest
The Amazon rainforest, also known in English as Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle, is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This basin encompasses seven million square kilometers (1.7 billion acres), of which five and a half million square kilometers (1.4 billion acres) are covered by the rainforest. This region includes territory belonging to nine nations.
Manaus
Manaus is a city in Brazil, the capital of the state of Amazonas. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. It is the most populous city of Amazonas, according to the statistics of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and is a popular ecotourist destination. Manaus belongs to mesoregion Center Amazonense and microregion Manaus. It is located in northern Brazil, 1,936 kilometers from the federal capital, Brasília.
National Institute of Amazonian Research
The National Institute of Amazonian Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia or INPA) is a public educational and research institution in Manaus, Brazil. It was founded in 1952, with the purpose of providing a further knowledge about the Brazilian Amazon Region. Most part of the research focus on the main topics of ecology, molecular ecology, zoology, botany, tropical agriculture and tropical pisciculture.
Amazon Theatre
The Amazon Theatre is an opera house located in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. It is the location of the annual Festival Amazonas de Ópera (Amazonas Opera Festival) and the home of the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra who regularly rehearses and performs at the Amazon Theater along with choirs, musical concerts and other performances.
Vivaldão
Estádio Vivaldo Lima, usually known by its nickname Vivaldão, was a multi-purpose stadium in Manaus, Brazil. It was formerly used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 43,000, with 31,000 seats. It was built between 1958 and 1970. The Vivaldão was owned by the government of Amazonas state. The stadium was named after Vivaldo Lima, who was the founder of Nacional Fast Clube and it was the home ground of América Futebol Clube (AM), Nacional Futebol Clube and Atlético Rio Negro Clube.
Estádio Ismael Benigno
Estádio Ismael Benigno, also known as Estádio da Colina, is a multi-use stadium in Manaus, Brazil. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 16,000 people. The Estádio Ismael Benigno is owned by São Raimundo Esporte Clube. The stadium is named after Ismael Benigno, who was a president of São Raimundo in the 1950s and in the 1960s, and is the one who bought the groundplot where the stadium was built.
Iranduba
Iranduba is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Its population in 2012 was 41,947 and its area is 2,215 km², making it the smallest municipality in Amazonas in terms of area. However, among the smallest municipalities of each Brazilian state, it is the largest. It is located directly south of Manaus, across the Rio Negro. It is connected to Manaus by the Manaus Iranduba Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge which opened in 2011.
Meeting of Waters
The Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas) is the confluence between the Rio Negro, a river with dark (almost black coloured) water, and the sandy-coloured Amazon River or Rio Solimões, as it is known the upper section of the Amazon in Brazil. For 6 km (3.7 mi) the river's waters run side by side without mixing. It is one of the main tourist attractions of Manaus, Brazil. The same also happens near Santarém, Pará with the Amazon and Tapajós rivers.
Amadeu Teixeira Arena
Amadeu Teixeira Arena is an indoor sporting arena located in Manaus, Brazil. The capacity of the arena is 11,800 spectators and opened in 2006. It hosts indoor sporting events such as basketball and volleyball, and also hosts concerts.
Port of Manaus
The Port of Manaus is a riverport located on the Rio Negro in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The Port of Manaus is an important commercial center for ocean-going vessels traveling the Amazon. In fact, it is the main transport hub for the entire upper Amazon Basin. It imports beef from the hinterlands and exports hides and leather. Important industries in the Port of Manaus include manufacturing of soap, chemicals, electronics equipment as well as shipbuilding, brewing, and petroleum refining.
Greater Manaus
The Greater Manaus (Grande Manaus, officially Região Metropolitana de Manaus, in Portuguese) is a large metropolitan area located in Amazonas state in Brazil. It consists of 8 municipalities, including the capital, Manaus. The Metropolitan area of Manaus is the 11th most populous in Brazil, with an estimated population of 2.3 million inhabitants. Also is the 14th richest in the country with a GDP estimated at 61 billion dollars.
Arena Amazônia
Arena Amazonia is the name of a football stadium in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil to be located on the current site of the Vivaldão stadium. The stadium will have an all-seater capacity of 46,000 and will be constructed from 2010 to 2012. It will host matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Manaus Iranduba Bridge
The Manaus Iranduba Bridge (called Ponte Rio Negro in Brazil) is a bridge over the Rio Negro with 3595 meters of length that links the cities of Manaus and Iranduba.
