Fremantle

Fremantle is a city in Western Australia, located at the mouth of the Swan River. Fremantle Harbour serves as the port of Perth, the state capital. Fremantle was the first area settled by the Swan River colonists in 1829. It was declared a city in 1929, and has a population of approximately 25,000. The city is named after Captain Charles Howe Fremantle, the English naval officer who had pronounced possession of Western Australia and who established a camp at the site.

Round House

The Round House built in late 1830 opened in 1831 the Round House was the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony and is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia. It is located at Arthur Head in Fremantle, and recent heritage assessments and appraisals of the precinct of the Round House incorporate Arthur Head. It was used for colonial and indigenous prisoners until 1886, when control of the Convict Establishment prison was transferred to the colony.

Esplanade Park is a public reserve in Fremantle, Western Australia. Situated on Marine Terrace and opposite the Esplanade Hotel, the reserve features about 100 mature Norfolk Island Pines (araucaria heterophylla) and the Explorers' Monument. Kings Square, also known as King's Square, is a town square in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is bounded by Queen, Newman, William, and Adelaide Streets. Though the square was originally a public reserve, it has been the site of Saint John's Church of England since 1843, and the Fremantle Town Hall since 1887. High Street was extended through and beyond the square in the 1880s, but the portion through the square was closed off in the 1960s.

Fremantle Post Office

The Fremantle Post Office located in Market Street, Fremantle was designed by Hillson Beasley of the Public Works Department, planned in 1906 and opened in 1907. Victoria Hall (Fremantle)

Victoria Hall located on High Street, Fremantle designed by Talbot Hobbs was built between 1896-1897 as St John's Parish Hall and renamed for the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. It was opened by Governor Smith and his wife on September 28, 1897. Victoria Hall, one of few goldrush buildings remaining in the east end of High Street, sits in a predominantly 1960's streetscape.

Adelaide Steamship House

The Adelaide Steamship House is on Mouat Street, Fremantle and was built in 1900 using a design provided by the Fremantle based archectural firm Oldham and Eales. The building takes its name from the original owners of the building the Adelaide Steamship Company who provided sea passenger and freight services around Australia. The build was damaged by fire c1947 with extensive restorations to its original design occurring during 1947-8 under the supervison of Architect F. Hawkins.

The Adelec Buildings located at 28-36 High Street, Fremantle were constructed in 1906 by the trustees of Captain Edward Henry Fothergills estate; for many years they were known as the Fothergills' Buildings. The buildings were designed by F.W. Burwell and constructed by J McCracken. There have been many tenants, including The Sunday Times and The Daily News. The buildings are listed on the Register of the National Estate.

Orient Hotel (Fremantle)

The Orient Hotel is on the corner of High and Henry streets in Fremantle, and was designed by Micheal Cavanagh. Built by Atkin and Law in 1902/03, the building was owned by Thomas O'Beirne. Since it was built it has continued to be a hotel though it has had a number of proprietors including the Parry family from 1923 to 1971. Restoration works have been carried out on the building a number of times. Extensive works in 1995 included the replacement of the two story verandas.

WD Moore & Co Warehouse complex is on Henry Street, Fremantle. It was unified in 1899 behind an ornamental stucco facade. A store was established on the site by Samuel Moore in the 1840s. William Dalgety Moore later established a general merchant business there in 1862. The complex comprises a residence, warehouse, factory stable, offices and shop, built between 1862 and 1899, in addition to a three storey backstore which was built at an unknown date, possibly as early as 1844.
