Newman, Western Australia
Newman is a town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is located about 1,186 kilometres north of Perth, and 9 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It can be reached by the Great Northern Highway. In the 2006 Australian census, its population was 4,245. Newman is a modern mining town, with suburban-style homes contrasting with the surrounding reddish desert. The Hickman Crater is 35 kilometres north of Newman.
Shire of East Pilbara
The Shire of East Pilbara is one of the four local government areas in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and with an area close to 380,000 square kilometres, is the third largest municipality in the world, after two new municipalities in Greenland. The municipality is bigger than many countries, for example Norway. The Shire's seat of government, and home to slightly over half the Shire's population, is the town of Newman in the shire's south-west.
Newman Senior High School
Newman Senior High School is a comprehensive public high school located in Newman, a regional centre 1,186 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. The school was established in 1961 and by 2012 had an enrolment of 243 students between Year 8 and Year 12, approximately 25% of whom were Aboriginal. The school initially opened as a junior high school in 1971 and continued to operate as one until becoming a high school in 1974.
Newman Power Station
Newman Power Station is a power station in Newman, WA part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is located about 1,186 kilometres (737 mi) north of Perth, and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It is a 178MW natural gas-fired power station servicing BHP Billiton’s “islanded grid”. Newman currently provides 100% of the power requirement of the islanded grid which supplies electricity to the Mt Newman Joint Venture operated by BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
