More reading: Wikipedia Article

Philipsburg is the main town and capital of the country of Sint Maarten. The town is situated on a narrow stretch of land between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond. It functions as the commercial center of Saint Martin island, whereof Sint Maarten encompasses the southern half. As of 2006, it has 1,338 inhabitants. The island was first sighted by Christopher Columbus on 11 November 1493, but there was already an Arawak settlement there before his discovery. Philipsburg was founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch navy; the settlement soon became a bustling centre of international trade. Two historic forts bear witness to Philipsburg's strategic importance in St. Maarten's history: Fort Amsterdam and Fort Willem. The main shopping district, Front Street, is in the heart of the city. Philipsburg also has a port that is home to many cruise liners, ships like "Celebrity Solstice", "Crown Princess", "Disney Magic", and in 2010, "Oasis of the Seas".

Attack on Saint Martin

More reading: Wikipedia Article

The Attack on Saint Martin was a failed attempt by the Dutch Republic to recapture the island and former base of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) from the Spanish. In 1633 the Spanish had invaded Saint-Martin and Anguilla, driving off the French and Dutch inhabitants. The French and Dutch banded together to repel the Spanish and it was during a 1644 sea battle that the Dutch commander Peter Stuyvesant, later the governor of New Amsterdam, unsuccessfully besieged Fort Amsterdam and was forced to retreat with the loss of hundreds of men. A stray Spanish cannonball shattered his leg, which had to be amputated. But luck was on the Dutch side, and when the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Netherlands ended, the Spanish no longer needed a Caribbean base and just sailed away in 1648.

More reading: Wikipedia Article

Area code 721 is the telephone area code of Sint Maarten within the North American Numbering Plan (telephone country code +1) since September 30, 2011. Before that time, Sint Maarten used the country code of +599, originally assigned to the now-dissolved Netherlands Antilles and still in use by Curaçao and the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba). The northern French side of the island, known as Saint-Martin, is not within the North American Numbering Plan, and has a separate country code +590, shared with Guadeloupe and Saint Barthélemy. Calls between the two parts of the island are international calls. There was a one-year permissive dialing period when either the old country code and the new area code could be used for dialing calls to Sint Maarten, but use of +1 721 is now mandatory.
