Hokitika

Hokitika is a township in the West Coast Region of New Zealand's South Island, 40 kilometres south of Greymouth, and close to the mouth of the Hokitika River. According to the 2006 census, the usually-resident population of the Hokitika urban area was 3,078, a decrease of 12 people since 2001. A further 828 people live in the surrounding area, an increase of 180 since 2001. On a clear day Aoraki / Mount Cook can clearly be seen from Hokitika's main street.

Taramakau River

The Taramakau River is in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the Southern Alps, 80 kilometres due east of Hokitika, and immediately below the saddle of the Harper's Pass, and runs westward for 75 kilometres into the Tasman Sea 15 kilometres south of Greymouth. Several small rivers are tributaries of the Taramakau, but the only one of note is the Otira River, the valley of which forms the western approach to Arthur's Pass.

Lake Kaniere

Lake Kaniere is located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It lies 30 kilometres southeast of Hokitika, and drains into the Tasman Sea via the Kaniere and Hokitika rivers. At 22 km², it is second only to Lake Brunner in size among the West Coast's lakes. Mount Graham is on the west coast of the lake. A small hydroelectric station is located on the Kaniere River, close to the lake's outflow.

Hokitika Airport

Hokitika Aerodrome is a small, uncontrolled aerodrome located 1 NM (1.9 km) north east of Hokitika in the suburb of Seaview on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is also the closest domestic airport with scheduled flights to Greymouth 40 km further north, the largest settlement on the coast. The airport handles aircraft up to ATR 72-500 size that are operated by national airline, Air New Zealand. The busiest day is Friday with five flights to Christchurch.

Ruatapu is a small town in the Westland District in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. The town's name stems from Ruatapu, a figure in Māori mythology. The town is located on a narrow strip of land between the Tasman Sea and Lake Mahinapua, a shallow lake that was originally a coastal lagoon. State Highway 6 runs through Ruatapu, connecting it to the nearby towns of Hokitika and Ross.

Lake Mahinapua

Lake Mahinapua is a shallow lake on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is roughly 10km south of Hokitika and near the small town of Ruatapu. It was formerly a coastal lagoon, but the buildup of coastal dunes made it an inland lake roughly 500 m from the Tasman Sea coastline. In 1907, the Lake Mahinapua Scenic Reserve was established to protect the land around the lake, and a number of walking tracks run through this area.

The Arahura River is a river located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is approximately 56 kilometers in length and flows into the Tasman Sea eight kilometers north of Hokitika, next to the Arahura Pa. The lower reaches of the Arahura River was a major producer of gold in the past - and extensively mined, but it is now worked out. It is also a major source of pounamu (greenstone) for the local Māori.
