Greymouth

Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand, and the seat of the Grey District Council. The population of the whole Grey District is 13,850, which accounts for % of the West Coast's inhabitants. The Greymouth urban area had an estimated population of 10,050 (June 2012 estimates). The District Council expects growth of 1.5% per year between 2006 and 2016.

Grey River

The Grey River / Māwheranui is located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in Lake Christabel, one of numerous small lakes on the western side of the Southern Alps,12 kilometres southwest of the Lewis Pass, and runs westward for 120 kilometres before draining into the Tasman Sea at Greymouth. The river was named by explorer Thomas Brunner in honour of New Zealand politician Sir George Grey.

Taramakau River

The Taramakau River is in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the Southern Alps, 80 kilometres due east of Hokitika, and immediately below the saddle of the Harper's Pass, and runs westward for 75 kilometres into the Tasman Sea 15 kilometres south of Greymouth. Several small rivers are tributaries of the Taramakau, but the only one of note is the Otira River, the valley of which forms the western approach to Arthur's Pass.

Brunner Mine disaster

The Brunner Mine disaster happened at 9:30am on Thursday 26 March 1896, when an explosion deep in the Brunner Mine killed all 65 miners below ground. The Brunner Mine disaster is the worst mining disaster in New Zealand’s history. It seemed most likely that the explosion was caused by firedamp, a common hazard in coal mines when a pocket of methane gas is accidentally ignited and explodes. Firedamp is all the more hazardous because of the after effects of the explosion.

Paroa, West Coast

Paroa is a settlement on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, just south of Greymouth. State Highway 6 and the Hokitika Branch railway both run through Paroa. This railway was originally a bush tramway that opened to Paroa from Greymouth in 1867 and was extended to Kumara in 1877. It was converted into a railway in 1893, and this time, ran from Paroa to Hokitika rather than Kumara.

Arnold River (New Zealand)

The Arnold River is located in the west of New Zealand's South Island. It is the outflow of Lake Brunner, which it links with the Grey River. The Arnold River flows northwest for 20 kilometres, joining the Grey immediately above the town of Brunner, some 15 kilometres from the Tasman Sea. It is a popular spot for whitewater kayaking and trout fishing. The Arnold Power Station is located on the river close to its confluence with the Grey.

Strongman Mine

The Strongman Mine was an underground coal mine north of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand from 1938 to 2003. On 19 January 1967 a gas explosion in the mine killed 19 miners. In 1994 the original mine was replaced by the Strongman 2 mine further up the Nine Mile valley. The Strongman 2 mine closed in 2003.

The New River is a river in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the hills to the west of Lake Brunner and flows down the north edge of the floodplain of the Taramakau River then turns north for about 2 kilometres behind coastal dunes before meeting the Tasman Sea. There was much gold dredging activity around the river. The river's name was formally changed to the dual name New River/Kaimata in 1998 as part of the Ngai Tahu claims settlement.
