Greymouth
Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand, and the seat of the Grey District Council. The population of the whole Grey District is 13,850, which accounts for % of the West Coast's inhabitants. The Greymouth urban area had an estimated population of 10,050 (June 2012 estimates). The District Council expects growth of 1.5% per year between 2006 and 2016.
Grey River
The Grey River / Māwheranui is located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in Lake Christabel, one of numerous small lakes on the western side of the Southern Alps,12 kilometres southwest of the Lewis Pass, and runs westward for 120 kilometres before draining into the Tasman Sea at Greymouth. The river was named by explorer Thomas Brunner in honour of New Zealand politician Sir George Grey.
Taramakau River
The Taramakau River is in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the Southern Alps, 80 kilometres due east of Hokitika, and immediately below the saddle of the Harper's Pass, and runs westward for 75 kilometres into the Tasman Sea 15 kilometres south of Greymouth. Several small rivers are tributaries of the Taramakau, but the only one of note is the Otira River, the valley of which forms the western approach to Arthur's Pass.
Dobson, New Zealand
Dobson is a small town on the banks of the Grey River in the South Island of New Zealand. It is 10 kilometres east from the river's mouth at Greymouth. The settlement of Taylorville is across the river from Dobson, but no bridge directly connects the two. State Highway 7 passes through Dobson. The population of Dobson and its surrounds, including Taylorville, was 672 in the 2006 Census, a decrease of 72 from 2001.
Brunner, New Zealand
Brunner is a town in the northwest of New Zealand's South Island. Together with Taylorville and Dobson to the south-west, it had a population of 672 at the 2006 census. It is 12 kilometres to the east of Greymouth, on the south bank of the Grey River. It is on the Midland Line railway near its junction with the Stillwater - Westport Line (SWL) in neighbouring Stillwater.
Greymouth Airport
Greymouth Airport is a small, uncontrolled aerodrome located 1 Nautical mile (1.9 km) south of Greymouth on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The aerodrome is operated by the Grey District Council and is available for general use without notice to the operator. The most recent commercial flights in 2007 were operated by Air West Coast direct to Westport then to Christchurch or onto Wellington. These services have since been discontinued.

There is also Stillwater, Auckland in the North Island. State Highway 7 passes through Stillwater, and it is a railway junction where the Stillwater - Westport Line meets the Midland Line.

Greymouth High School is the largest school on the West Coast of New Zealand with a roll of 649 sutdents. The school has a national distance learning division, Karoro Learning. The Mawhera Services Academy (MSA), a military orientated course, is a division of Greymouth High School.
Brunner Mine disaster
The Brunner Mine disaster happened at 9:30am on Thursday 26 March 1896, when an explosion deep in the Brunner Mine killed all 65 miners below ground. The Brunner Mine disaster is the worst mining disaster in New Zealand’s history. It seemed most likely that the explosion was caused by firedamp, a common hazard in coal mines when a pocket of methane gas is accidentally ignited and explodes. Firedamp is all the more hazardous because of the after effects of the explosion.
Paroa, West Coast
Paroa is a settlement on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, just south of Greymouth. State Highway 6 and the Hokitika Branch railway both run through Paroa. This railway was originally a bush tramway that opened to Paroa from Greymouth in 1867 and was extended to Kumara in 1877. It was converted into a railway in 1893, and this time, ran from Paroa to Hokitika rather than Kumara.

Karoro is a suburb to the south-west of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand. The population was 879 in the 2006 Census, a decrease of 15 from 2001.
Cobden, New Zealand
Cobden is a suburb to the north of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Grey River separates Cobden from the rest of Greymouth. To the north is the Rapahoe Range, also called the Twelve Apostles Range. State Highway 6 skirts the south-eastern edge of Cobden. The population was 1,707 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 30 from 2001.
Blaketown
Blaketown is a suburb to the west of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Grey River separates Blaketown from Cobden, and the Blaketown Lagoon separates it from the centre of Greymouth. The population was 969 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 9 from 2001. The town is named after Isaac Blake, an early storekeeper in the district.
Brunner Mine
The Brunner Mine was a coal mine on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. The Brunner Mine was one of several mines situated on the banks of the Grey River, at an area known as "Coal Gorge" between the townships of Stillwater and Taylorville. The town of Brunner (formerly Brunnerton) is nearby. Coal was discovered on the West Coast by Nelson surveyor Thomas Brunner "during the most arduous of his journeys in search of more agricultural land".

John Paul II High School, Greymouth is an integrated Catholic, co-educational Year 9 to Year 13 (Form 3-7) secondary school located in Greymouth, New Zealand. The school was founded in 1980 from the amalgamation of two schools, St Mary’s High School, operated by the Sisters of Mercy (who arrived in Greymouth in 1882) and Marist Brothers Boys’ School operated by the Marist Brothers (founded in 1892).
Arnold River (New Zealand)
The Arnold River is located in the west of New Zealand's South Island. It is the outflow of Lake Brunner, which it links with the Grey River. The Arnold River flows northwest for 20 kilometres, joining the Grey immediately above the town of Brunner, some 15 kilometres from the Tasman Sea. It is a popular spot for whitewater kayaking and trout fishing. The Arnold Power Station is located on the river close to its confluence with the Grey.
Strongman Mine
The Strongman Mine was an underground coal mine north of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand from 1938 to 2003. On 19 January 1967 a gas explosion in the mine killed 19 miners. In 1994 the original mine was replaced by the Strongman 2 mine further up the Nine Mile valley. The Strongman 2 mine closed in 2003.
New River / Kaimata
The New River is a river in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the hills to the west of Lake Brunner and flows down the north edge of the floodplain of the Taramakau River then turns north for about 2 kilometres behind coastal dunes before meeting the Tasman Sea. There was much gold dredging activity around the river. The river's name was formally changed to the dual name New River/Kaimata in 1998 as part of the Ngai Tahu claims settlement.
