Kenya, officially the Republic of Kenya, is a sovereign state in East Africa. The capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya lies on the equator with the Indian Ocean to the south-east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km and has a population of about 43½ million in early 2013. The country is named after Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kenya was originally referred to as "Mt. Kirinyaga" by the indigenous people. "Kirinyaga or Kerenyaga, meaning ‘mountain of whiteness’ because of its snow capped peak"; The name was subsequently changed to Mt. Kenya due to the inability of the British to pronounce "Kirinyaga" correctly. Kenya has a warm and humid climate along its Indian Ocean coastline, with wildlife-rich savannah grasslands inland towards the capital. Nairobi has a cool climate that gets colder approaching Mount Kenya, which has three permanently snow-capped peaks. Further inland there is a warm and humid climate around Lake Victoria, and temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The northeastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake and the world's largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya is famous for its safaris and diverse wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. There are several world heritage sites such as Lamu, and world renowned beaches such as Kilifi where international yachting competitions are held each year. The African Great Lakes region, of which Kenya is a part, has been inhabited by humans since the Lower Paleolithic period. The Bantu expansion reached the area from West-Central Africa by the first millennium AD, and the borders of the modern state comprise the crossroads of the Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan and Afro-Asiatic ethno-linguistic areas of the continent, making Kenya a multi-cultural country. European and Arab presence in Mombasa dates to the Early Modern period, but European exploration of the interior began only in the 19th century. The British Empire established the East Africa Protectorate in 1895, known from 1920 as the Kenya Colony. The Republic of Kenya became independent in December 1963. Following a referendum in August 2010 and adoption of a new constitution, Kenya is now divided into 47 semi-autonomous counties, governed by elected governors. The capital, Nairobi, is a regional commercial hub. The economy of Kenya is the largest by GDP in East and Central Africa. Agriculture is a major employer and the country traditionally exports tea and coffee, and more recently fresh flowers to Europe. The service industry is a major economic driver. Kenya is a member of the East African Community.

Nairobi School is a national secondary school in Nairobi, Kenya. It was founded in 1902 by the British settlers who had made Nairobi their home after the construction of the Uganda Railway. In 1925 Lord Delamere and Sir Edward Grigg, then Governor of Kenya, separated the European Nairobi School into a senior boys school (Prince of Wales School), senior girls school (Kenya High School) and a junior school (Nairobi Primary School). In 1931 a new school was built at the 250-acre site at Kabete, the main school buildings being designed by Herbert Baker. The school was then renamed the Prince of Wales School, but following Kenya's independence the school was renamed Nairobi School in 1965. In July 2008, the school was closed for the first time ever to avert a student strike. The school is also popularly referred to as 'Patch'.

State House (Kenya)

Located at -1.25, 36.8 (Lat. / Lng.), less than 2 mi away.
More reading: Wikipedia Article

State House is the official residence of the President of Kenya. It was originally known as Government House. This building was built in 1907 in Nairobi to serve as the official residence of the Governor of British East Africa when Kenya was a British Colony. The governor would conduct his official functions at the old Provincial Commissioner’s office (now a national monument) next to Nyayo House and then retire to Government House for the day. After independence, Government House was renamed State House. Although it remained the official residence of the Head of State, in practice it became an administrative or operational office occasionally providing accommodation to visiting State guests and receptions on National Days. This scenario has prevailed to-date with the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and President Moi preferring private residence as opposed to living in State House. State House in Nairobi stands on a 3 square kilometre piece of land. It is a 10 minute drive from the city centre. Other than the Nairobi one, there are other State Houses and Lodges scattered around the country to provide accommodation to the Head of State whenever he is touring various parts of the country.

Rosslyn Academy is a private Christian international school in Nairobi, Kenya. It was founded in 1967. It is an international, coed, day school with a North American curriculum and classes from preschool to twelfth grade. Enrollment is approximately 550, with a senior graduating class ranging from 35-50 each year. Approximately 40% of the students are American, and more than 40 nationalities are represented in the school. Most of its teachers are North American certified. It is located in the northwestern outskirts of Nairobi, in Gigiri, a safe location of Nairobi near the United States Embassy and the United Nations Headquarters for Africa. The site was formerly part of a coffee plantation. The school was originally founded as Mara Hills academy in northern Tanzania in the 1940s, as a one room school for the children of Mennonite missionaries. The school moved to its current location in 1967, and opened a boarding facility offering K-8 education. The school remained a boarding school into the 1980s when the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention invested in the school to provide an American education for the children of its missionaries residing in the Nairobi area. This was also a critical financial move in the history of the school as it saved it from financial insolvency. In the early 1990s the Assemblies of God missionary sending agency also purchased a stake in the school. The school is currently jointly owned by the International Mission Board (by proxy through the Baptist Mission of Kenya), the Eastern Mennonite Mission and the Assemblies of God. The school remained strictly a K-8 school until the 1990s. Most of the students transferred to Rift Valley Academy upon entering ninth grade. However, the school gradually added a high school program and graduated its first senior class in 1991. Today the school offers many high school courses in the social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and literature and language. Rosslyn Academy also teaches a number of Advanced Placement AP courses ranging from physics and biology to foreign language. The school is also now known for its extra-curricular sports program. The Rosslyn Eagles consistently place in the top of their leagues in both men's and women's varsity and junior varsity sports. The inter-schools athletic program includes men's and women's football (soccer), basketball, volleyball, field hockey, and track and field. Additionally, the men participate in an interschool rugby program. The Eagles' traditional rivals are the other large international schools in Kenya, namely the Rift Valley Academy Buffalos and the International School of Kenya Lions.

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is one of the four major UN office sites where several different UN agencies have a joint presence. The office complex is located in Nairobi, Kenya. It serves as the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme, and UN-HABITAT. The complex of buildings is located next to the Karura Forest and across the street (United Nations Avenue) from the US Embassy in Nairobi. In November 2004, the United Nations Security Council held a rare session at Nairobi to discuss the situations in southern and western Sudan. The meeting was convened at the urging of then-Ambassador John Danforth of the United States. The UN Complex at Gigiri contains a 'green' building, a completely energy and carbon-neutral building, housing several UNEP offices. The building is the first of its kind in Africa, recycling water and using natural light to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. In addition, the building is designed to use natural flow of air as a substitute to air conditioning, and it contains solar panels to generate all the energy that the building would consume. It was opened on 31 March 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki. UNON also hosts the annual *East Africa Model United Nations Conference for secondary school and University students from East Africa.
