Emilia is a historical region of northern Italy which approximately corresponds to the western and north-eastern portions of today’s Emilia-Romagna region. It takes its name from the Via Aemilia, a Roman road constructed by the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in 187 BCE to connect Rimini with Piacenza. The eastern boundary is formed by the rivers Sillaro and Reno, which divide it from Romagna. To the north the river Po forms its border with Veneto and Lombardy. To the west and south the Apennine drainage divide separates it from Liguria and Tuscany. Administratively it comprises the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara and Bologna. The region corresponds approximately to the ancient Cispadane Gaul which, under the Augustan territorial organisation of Italia c. 7 CE, became Regio VIII Aemilia.

The Aerautodromo di Modena (Modena Aero-autodrome) was a race track on the edge of Modena in Italy. The track had a length of 2.4 km . It was opened in 1950 and the circuit was crossed by an airstrip of about 1.6 km in length which was used by the local flying club. The track hosted nine editions of the Modena Grand Prix for F1 and F2 racing cars, the last one in 1961. The circuit continued to host other racing events (sportcars, grand touring, Formula Junior, motorcycles) until 1975. In the 1960s and 1970s the track also served as a test track for Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini during the morning or afternoon (but not both) on week days. At other times of day it was used by residents of the adjacent military camp for driver training, equipped with less exotic vehicles. Despite the creeping expansion of nearby Modena, which involved a proliferation of apartment blocks and electricity pylons, the airstrip was a favoured venue for a number of local aerobatics enthusiasts. The circuit was subsequently demolished, and the site redeveloped as a public park to honour Enzo Ferrari.

The Torre della Ghirlandina or simply Ghirlandina is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Modena, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Standing at 86.12 metres, the tower is the traditional symbol of Modena, being visible from all directions outside the city. The structure was set up in 1179 on five floors, initially called Torre di San Geminiano. To compete with Bologna's towers, the commune added the characteristic octagonal cusp, designed by Arrigo da Campione, one of the numerous masters from Campione who took part in the cathedral's renovation in the 13th-15th centuries. The top of the tower is decorated with two ghirlande (two marble railings), whence the name. In the interior, the Sala della Secchia room (with 15th century frescoes) is home of a copy of the depiction of the Secchia rapita, a memory of the tower's former role as treasury of the Modenese commune. Also notable are the sculpted capitals in the Sala dei Torresani hall, in the fifth floor.
